Week 2! - Adjusting!

I’m glad so many people liked my first blog! So here’s another one! I wanted to let everyone know that they have have any questions at all, they can feel free to comment or email them to me.

One thing I thought would be fun is to give a little review on a German treat once week. Yesterday I walked down to the Rewe (a grocery store) to buy some German candy. I looked at everything for a long time and eventually settled on a Kuhflecken (Happy Cow) Milka chocolate bar and Haribo Happy Cherries. I didn’t realized I picked such happy candies until I cam home and read the titles! I really liked both of them! The chocolate bar is like dark chocolate and white chocolate mixed together so it looks like a cow and the Cherries are just like a whole bag of cherry flavored gummies! (In the shape of cherries of course). I highly recommend both of them the next time you stop by Germany!

This week was pretty good! Language school is going well! We have been working on using verbs in the past tense for most of this week along with some other random things. It’s difficult but I know in just a matter of a few weeks it will be natural and it’ll seem easy.

Renate and I were also able to get a lot of practical things done this week! The biggest thing was that we got my bank account set up! It took a couple tries, and the first bank we went to was pretty unprofessional to say the least, but now it’s all good!

One of the things i’ve had to adjust to here is the weather. It’s very different than in Colorado or Wisconsin. It’s a lot more humid so my hair has been crazy. It’s been very curly, but eventually it gets very frizzy and ugly so I have to braid it or put it in a bun. The weather is also much more predictable than in CO. Because of the mountains in CO and the dry air temperature can vary a lot. It can be in the teens one day, and in the 50s or 60s that next. Here, it’s pretty much always around the mid 30s (in Fahrenheit). For me, it’s one of my least favorite temperatures. I prefer either very cold or warm. If it’s cold I want to be able to bundle up with lots of cozy layers. But here I seem to get too warm in a coat, but if I unzip it then I get cold. I know it will get warm soon enough though! Then I can go on long walks, open the windows, and go on many bike rides! I can’t wait to see the beautiful Freiburg in it’s warmer months!

For me one of the biggest differences between the US and Germany has been access to Wifi. In CO Wifi is everywhere. In my school, at home, at all my friend’s houses. So pretty much I almost always have access to the internet. My phone can at anytime do anything basically. When i’m home I personally tend to spend a lot of time connected to the internet. I check social media on my phone, and then watch YouTube on my computer, then i’ll play a game on my phone and do my homework on my laptop. These are all just my habits. I was so dependent on Wifi. Some things, like homework, I had no other option but to use technology. But even in my free time I can definitely admit that I would gravitate towards using the internet. If I was bored my routine was to see if anyone posted a new YouTube video or to text a friend. Here in this apartment, there is not access to Wifi. It’s honestly been really refreshing not having such easy access to all of that here. There’s such a good balance. I can hook up my computer to ethernet whenever I want to email or blog, but it’s not convenient enough that I do it all the time. It’s not my first instinct anymore when i’m bored. I also really enjoy being disconnected from social media. It allows me to really focus on my time here. And enjoy every moment of these 6 months that I can. I was never the type of person to be interested in drama or everyone’s doings back home, but now that I don’t even use social media here I don’t even have to think about it. It’s been nice to just be able to focus on myself and find new activities to entertain myself. Personally I really like knitting in my free time and coloring on plain paper but also in an adult coloring book given to me by the Lary family before I left. (Thanks guys!) This week I challenge you to turn off the Wifi for a day, or maybe even the whole week if you can. If I can do it, you can too.

One of the things I got to do this week was go to the stables with Rahel and her friend Anna. It was so beautiful up there. We played with a pony named Tessa. She’s pretty old, but a very friendly pony. We did some exercises with her, fed her, walked her around a little bit. It was a lot of fun. We also went on a beautiful hike with Renate’s parents. We ended up at some castle ruins but because the sun was setting it was very beautiful. We got a little cold on the way down, but it was definitely worth it. Here are some photos of when we were at the stables and the walk we went on.
Here Rahel is getting Tessa (the little brown one) and you can see the beautiful city of Freiburg in the distance.
At the stables we saw a cat sleeping on one of the ponies! So cute!
The view from the top when we went on a hike.
Some of the ruins we saw on our hike.
Another pretty view of the sun setting when we went on our hike!

That’s pretty much it for this week! I hope you enjoyed this week’s update, and as I said before let me know if you have any questions at all! Tschüss!
